The world progressed and duties of our favorite entrance door have become more diverse and complicated.

Earlier it was enough to just protect its master, then gradually it had to look good also. things started to become even more difficult when it had to keep it weight in check. For a very long period this was enough for a door.

But at the dawn of 21st century door had to learn few more tricks...& these are drastic.... the door is made of wood which is a fuel... but door is supposed to be fire rated. it is finished like glass but must give raw feel. Sometimes it should provide ventilation and be sound barrier another time... it must be tough on intruders but easy on kids & pets...

Challenges for a Door

In normal circumstances doors, must whether following factors which affect their finish & durability

Moisture - Environmental moisture in air is the main reason of the delamination & disintegration of products derived from the wood. Moisture along with dust is the main culprit for rusting of the steel furniture. Industries have come up with practically very effective solution to counter effects of moisture. But once these protective measures are depleted basic chemistry of materials is bound to show its true colors.

Fire - Wood, plastic & fabric are excellent fuels with huge number of calories stored in it. And we want them to stop spread of fire! And yes, we could achieve it. But thicker door which takes more time to burn & let fire pass, cause more damage. A two-hour fire rated wooden door has it is not a fuel. a two-hour fire rated steel door will deform after two hour and let fire pass. Fire will only cross a 2 hr. fire rated steel door if room has enough fuel for 2hrs! Every kitchen and electrical duct must have 2hr fire rated steel door.

Cold - Wood is a natural insulator with pleasant to touch whereas steel is just opposite, freely passes heat. Very unpleasant to touch cold in cold weather hot in hot. A particle board door may be weak but very good insulators.

Impacts – The ability to withstand impact defines how much day to day abuse a door can handle. While it is very high for solid wood doors less for hollow doors. Hollow metal doors use smart engineering to provide impact resistance with low weight filler i.e. honey comb craft paper. Wooden/particle board sandwich doors achieve low level of impact resistance & strength. Minor dents in steel doors can be repaired with the help of auto body repair kits but major damage may require replacement of complete door. MDF/Particle boards once damaged are near impossible to repair.

Screws- The capacity to hold screws decides workability while installation and reparability of the doors. Here again solid wood scores over all other materials. Wooden composite doors with particle board infill & MDF skin use wood inlays for strength, hanging of door & fixing of ironmongery.

Wooden Fire Doorss

Wooden fire doors are doors which stop passage of fire from one room to another. Now many state government & local bodies in India require the buildings to have certified fire doors. The fire doors tested in accordance with IS3614 or similar British or US standard are universally acceptable in India. There can be different internal constructions of the door. But generally, the material used should be slow burning. The use of intumescent strips on door linings is done by default. In case of fire generally wood constricts but intumescent strips expand to fill the gap.

Comparison between Wooden Doors and Hollow Metal doors

Wooden Doors

1. Wooden fire rated doors are not recommended for fire ratings of 60minutes and above as per the international standard.

2. Wooden fire rated doors are not consistent on performance and hence the core used plays a vital role.

3. Wooden fire doors must be thick; thus, they store more calorie. Although they will not pass fire but cause damage to room of origin by burning for 30 & 60 minutes.

4. Wooden doors give warm touch & feel which people like. Because it’s a non-conductor of heat.

5. The quality of wood may not be consistent throughout the building and hence the relevant performance.

6. Wooden fire doors can be offered in veneer, painted & laminated finish.

7. Requires high level of maintenance as the wood being a organic material always tends to contraction and expansion. Moisture affect all wooden products adversely. There are problems of termite & Borer as well.

8. There are limitations on door sizes and vision glass as the rating goes beyond 60minutes.

9. True wooden fire doors are very expensive because of the core.

10. Can generate Toxic gases if the core or the surface material is not appropriate.

Hollow Metal doors

1.Hollow metal fire doors are used upto 4hr fire rating.

2. Hollow metal fire doors are design oriented and are not infill specific.

3. Steel can become hot but does not release any heat by burning itself.

4. Steel door feel hot or cold depending on ambient temperature. Right door can offer wrapping steel doors with veneer which balance this drawback.

5. The consistency on the material is assured as the base material is steel.

6. Steel doors are currently not available veneer & laminate finish. Right door can offer veneer wrap for HMPS doors.
